What is heart failure?

Heart failure is a chronic, progressive (getting worse) condition that means the heart has difficulty pumping blood to the rest of the body. 1 Because the heart can’t pump blood well enough, the organs don’t get enough oxygen-rich blood to stay healthy. 2

Signs and symptoms of heart failure

Early signs and symptoms of heart failure may be mild and difficult to recognize at first. 7 You may simply feel more tired than usual or become short of breath sooner. 1 You may find that everyday activities, such as cleaning, walking the dog, shopping, or even playing with the kids, become more difficult day by day. 8 These signs can easily be attributed to aging or lack of fitness, but they may actually be warning signs and symptoms of heart failure.
